Procedural Words To Use

  • Acknowledge – please let me know you heard and understood this
  • Affirm – Yes
  • Approved – Permission is granted
  • Break – I’m separating this part of a message and the next
  • Break Break – The message just given is for a different aircraft or station then the next message
  • Cancel – The previous message should be disregarded
  • Check – please examine or check and respond with an answer
  • Cleared – Authorisation to proceed with what ever follows those words is given
  • Confirm – please respond to show you understood or received this message
  • Contact – Please establish radio contact with
  • Correct – I can confirm that is correct
  • Correction – an error or mistake was made in my transmission, this is the correct version
  • Disregard – The previous transmission should be regarded as not sent
  • Go Ahead – Proceed with your message or transmission
  • How do you read? – Please confirm a readability score from 1 to 5
  • I say again – creates emphasis and stresses the importance of previous transmission
  • Monitor – Listen to frequency
  • Negative – Permission is not granted, meaning NO
  • Oblique – means slash,oblique stroke or a 45° angle for example joining oblique downwind
  • Observe – watch for something
  • Out – this is only used in extremely difficult communications meaning I finished speaking, conversation finished
  • Over – this is only used in extremely difficult communications meaning I finished speaking, please respond now
  • Read Back – Repeat all or the specified part of instructions you just received
  • Re-Cleared – This new clearance supersedes your last clearance
  • Report – Send me information on what I am asking you to report on eg: Report altitude and heading
  • Request – Please let me know the following eg: Request position and intention
  • Roger – I received and understood
  • Say Again – repeat all, or of they specify part of it eg: Say Again your altitude
  • Say Words Twice – – this is only used in extremely difficult communications meaning please repeat all parts of conversation before saying next part…eg: At 3500  tracking 270, At 3500 tracking 270
  • Speak Slower – slow down speech rate in words per minute
  • Standby – Wait a moment I am busy or checking
  • Verify – Check something and confirm with me
  • Wilco – I understand and will comply with request or instructions given
