Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC)

At all major airports and many regional airports ASIC cards are a mandatory requirement. This is a security clearance introduced in the wake of September 11.  The card costs around $180 to $260 depending who you obtain it from, its purpose is to help ensure that people in certain areas of airports have security background checks in place.

You can obtain your ASIC card from RA-Aus by completing the forms available on the website.

If they are required at your airport, you will need one, before you can be unaccompanied airside. It must be worn on a lanyard, around your neck and visible at all times.

Most passenger transport airports, have areas where even with an ASIC card, you cannot enter the area.

If they are not required at your aerodrome, you will not require one until you start flying out of aerodromes that require them. This is generally once you have your pilot certificate or once you begin doing your navigatio flights for your cross country endorsement.

Its very important, that expired ASIC cards are sent back to the issuer, rather than discarded.
