2 Stroke Engines

The following diagram represents a typical 2 stroke engine. Note not to scale.

The 2 stroke still has four strokes, however all 4 strokes are completed every time the engine does one 360° revolution.

  • Compression Stroke – the piston is past both ports and it is compressing the air fuel that was sucked up the transfer port
  • Power Stroke – the spark is produced and the explosion drives the piston downwards,
  • Exhaust Stroke – the piston moving past the exhaust port allows the exhaust to escape
  • Transfer Stroke – the exhaust rushing out and the piston compressing the air fuel in the crank forces air and fuel up the transfer port into the top of the cylinder ready for compression
